Winners, C Grade Tasmanian Band Championships, 2007 Following a decision during 1987 to support the formation of a band on the eastern shore, Neil Turnbull was engaged to carry out a feasibility study. As a result of this study and consequent recommendations, Council approved the sponsoring of the band which was formed on Tuesday 16th August, 1988, under the musical direction of Graham Brinkman with Neil Turnbull as Band Manager. The band has been serving the community through regular engagements at Anzac Days, Christmas functions, Richmond gatherings, seafarer events as well as scheduled concerts and public performances ever since. The Clarence City Band currently comprises the following ensembles:
· The Clarence Concert Band · The Clarence Stage Band – directed by Rodney Woodward · The Clarence Brass Band (established April 2006) – conducted by Bob Alexander · The Clarence Development Program which consists of: o The Clarence Beginner Band o The Clarence Intermediate Band o The Clarence Development Band
In a move to secure the future of the Band, the committee of 2003 saw the need to establish a development program that would provide opportunities for any person (adult or young person 10 years of age or older) who wanted to learn to play a wind or percussion instrument as well as further development opportunities for those who may have limited instrument skills.
Each of the Development Program Bands uses structured learning materials called ‘Standard of Excellence’ and the prime focus of the development program is to systematically develop instrumental and musicianship skills of the players in the hope that they may choose to eventually continue their involvement in music making as members of the Clarence City Concert Band.
The Band is now in the situation of being able to offer instrumental development opportunities to a wide range of people ranging from those who have never played or learned to read music through to accomplished instrumentalists.
Further information about the Band can be obtained from Tom Goninon (e-mail musical director) .
