Awards Structure

An Awards System for the Clarence City Band

A system of awards provides a means whereby an organisation formerly recognizes and records for posterity, the meritorious achievements of its members.

Any organisation can only exist and grow because of the commitment and dedication of its members, but there are individuals who demonstrate a higher level of commitment than others to their involvement in the organisation.  It is such people who:

·    attended most if not all of the organisations meetings/functions

·    attend to the ‘nuts and bolts’ of the organisation,

·    attend to the ‘behind the scenes’ tasks,

·    encourage members to become more deeply involved in the organisation

·    provide leadership in the many facets of the life of the organisation

·    are role models for other members.

Such members not only deserve to be formally recognized by the organisation, but that recognition should be recorded in such a way that it

·    is recorded and becomes part of the official history of the organisation and

·    is displayed in a prominent place on an ongoing basis.

I believe that it is important for the Band to institute an awards system that formally recognizes the contributions of those that have:

·    honoured their commitment to the Band through excellent attendance at band functions

·    excelled as playing members of the Band and

·    have ‘gone beyond the call of duty’ in regard to their involvement in the Band

I believe that such recognition should be recorded in a manner that a written record of recipients of various awards, over time is created and that the record be displayed in a prominent place on an ongoing basis.

Proposed Awards for the Clarence City Band

  1. Attendance Award – presented to those that have achieved 100% attendance for any of the bands that meet on a weekly basis. Some further recognition could be given to members who achieve say 90% and above attendance record.

  2. Player of the Year Award – one award for each of the ensembles under the Clarence City Band umbrella – decision to be made by the group’s regular conductor in consultation with the Musical Director.
Striving for musical excellence and the encouragement of all to continue to strive to enhance their skills is at the core of our practice at every level. The player of the year should be the person who displays a high level of instrumental skill, commensurate with the group in which they perform along with a demonstrated willingness to support other band members in refining their instrumental skills.

  3. Band Person of the Year – one award open to all members from every ensemble.  The Band Person of the Year will:
    1. be a regular attendee
    2. be dedicated to playing their parts to the best of their ability
    3. have demonstrated musical leadership within their ensemble
    4. have demonstrated initiative within their ensemble and in the wider band context
    5. have willingly undertaken tasks essential for the smooth running of the Clarence City Band.

To be chosen by the Band Committee

  1. Player’s Award – to be decided by the players in each ensemble – to be awarded to the person who, in the ensemble members’ view, has been the best band member for the year.

  1. Support Person of the Year – to be open to any non-playing supporter of the Band who has made exceptional contribution to the running of the Band over the preceding year.
To be chosen by the Band Committee

  1. Life Membership – open to any person (player or non-player) who has made an outstanding contribution to the Band over an extended period of time.
To be chosen by the Band Committee
